Ahrefs
Updated 2026-08-16Bootstrapped SEO platform out of Singapore, about 196 employees, no outside funding, extending into AEO/GEO from its own crawler infrastructure. Recent releases: Brand Radar reports inside Report Builder, Claude added as a tracked AI platform, and a Brand Radar API that exposes citation state as a queryable field.
Three scores, refreshed weekly from live market signals rather than a once-a-year analyst report. Presence is how established a vendor is in the market right now. Velocity is how fast they are shipping, raising, and winning customers. Agent Readiness is how easily your own agents can build on them through an API, MCP server, SDK, or CLI. Scores are relative across the vendors we track; the raw inputs ship in the downloadable dataset.
The Solution & Approach
Ahrefs is a 2010-vintage SEO platform. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, and Rank Tracker are the core, and since January 2026 the product cadence has pushed outward into AEO/GEO. Brand Radar indexes brand presence across six AI platforms, sold as a $199 to $699 add-on, with Custom AI Prompt Tracking layered on top at $50 to $250 by check volume. Claude joined the tracked platforms in July, running on the official API with web search enabled and eight checks per update rather than one.
The angle is cost. Tim Soulo, Ahrefs' CMO, published "Profound AI Alternatives" in April 2026 arguing that Ahrefs already owns the crawler, so AI-visibility data is a marginal query against existing infrastructure instead of a new data-acquisition line item. Firehose, a free real-time web-mentions API launched in March with Lucene-style query rules and no announced end date, is the clearest expression of that bet. It gives away a data surface that mention-monitoring vendors charge for. Soulo runs marketing at Ahrefs, so read the comparison accordingly.
The 2026 direction is toward making AI visibility programmable rather than reportable. The official remote MCP server went live in April across Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot Studio. Agent A, a standalone AI marketing agent with full access to Ahrefs data, launched in May at $99 a month, and by June it was writing and monthly-refreshing Ahrefs' own five-part research series on the most-cited websites in AI answers. In July the Brand Radar API began returning four citation states: mentioned, cited, found but not cited, and not found. "Found but not cited" is the diagnostically useful one, and this is the first tracked AEO API to expose it as a field a team can build workflows against.
Best for
Teams already running SEO inside Ahrefs who want AI-visibility tracking as a metered add-on to an existing contract rather than a separate pure-play subscription.

Agent Experience
How you build on this platform (or wire it into your own agents):
One of the stronger build-on-top options in the category: an official remote MCP server on Streamable HTTP across five AI clients with OAuth-style consent and scoped keys, an API v3 covering Rank Tracker project and keyword management plus Brand Radar citation metrics and time series, a free Firehose mentions API, and Agent A as a first-party agent with the same data access as the UI.

Company, Financials & Funding History
Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Singapore, with roughly 196 employees. Ahrefs is bootstrapped and has taken no outside funding, which is the basis of the cost argument it makes against venture-backed AI-visibility pure-plays.
