OpenClaw is working to be the self-hosted layer that runs an agent on your own machine and reaches you through the chat apps you already use. Its documentation now describes a control plane for other agent harnesses. Operators talk mostly about setup: which model to plug in, how to sandbox the machine, and what a Mac mini deployment looks like. Release news and comparisons with managed products come up often, and agency and GTM builders list it among the agent tools in their outbound stacks. Business Profile
OpenClaw began as one developer's side project. Peter Steinberger released it in November 2025 as Clawdbot, renamed it Moltbot in January after a trademark request, then took the OpenClaw name three days later. The project has no commercial company entity and no venture funding to report. The OpenClaw Foundation, a non-profit, now stewards it and employs the core team. During 2026 the project moved from side project toward infrastructure: mobile companion apps arrived in June, an extended-stable release channel and public maturity scorecard in July, and Microsoft built its Scout assistant on the framework. Steinberger joined OpenAI in February and still maintains the project from there, while community maintainers ship releases.
